Search results could have extra column "attachment"
(maybe only an attachment icon).
Then you can see easily on software boards like this one, where a most current attachment is in a thread.
That would normally be the latest version of a code.

This attachment list portion of the integrated index page will list attachments according to date and will sort according to the allowed attachments in the config.inc.php file. The sort by option is disabled when using the exclude attachments option. Here's an example: http://www.chattersonline.com/test/index.php?Cat=&paction=attachments
